Valgard is an ancient pack originating from the far north. Rumor has it the pack already existed before the third world war, that their excelling knowledge of how to bend nature to their own will lead them to survive the devastating event. Even in recent years their herbalists were known far and wide for their remedies, but not only their advanced medicine earned them the respect of neighbouring packs. So did their ever-neutral standing. Valgard is a pack with no interest in picking sides, neither on individual nor on political level. Whenever there was a dispute between packs, Valgard offered to heal those in need regardless of their affiliation. This resulted in Valgard territory being universally respected as neutral ground.
After being driven from their native land by the unsuspected detonation of a sleeping WW3 bomb, they fled south for several months, until they arrived in Kynheim and claimed a new territory with the help of a friendly neighboring pack.
Valgard and Selcouth
Allies. They helped us when we most needed it. We are in their dept.
Valgard and Taiga
Bitter. They don't seem very charitable, but only time will tell.
Valgard and Outsiders
The wolves of Valgard don't have the luxury of choosing who can be trusted. Previously the safe haven for the injured and weak, now they are the ones seeking for help from whoever appears capable of providing such.
Den Site & Main Camp
Valgard's main camp is a small area just around the entrance of a large cave. The main camp looks unreasonably small from the outside, since it barely stretches along the tinest bit of land, but
as soon as one steps foot into the cave itself, it becomes clear that not much room is needed outside of this cavern complex. Besides, Valgard has a bit of a rough time trusting the outside
world. Better stick together for now and establish trust in their territory before they potentially expand their camp.
The Green Isle
If you follow the main camp north and leave its borders to walk along the shoreline, you inevitably come across a second waterfall. Walk along a slippery path just behind the crashing currents and you will find yourself on a beautiful green headland with the most luscious herbal supply you can imagine!
Hunting Grounds [ OUTSIDE OF THE TERRITORY! ]
Valgard's main hunting grounds may only be visited by Deltas and above, as they lie outside of the territory! Omegas are still expected to carry their weight, which is well possible thanks to the abundant prey in the mountains and on the plain above their den. To prevent over-hunting their small territory though, group hunts are exclusively held across from the river. The rich variety of prey on these grounds attracts other predators as well, so you better be careful.
Fishing Bridge
Selcouth has taught some willing Valgardians how to fish, or at least showed them rudimentary ways to catch a critter or two in the water. The bridge up north is a popular spot to practice such fishing skills, as it is shallow enough to easily move around but deep enough for a lot of fish to reside here. The bridge itself aids the process in no way, but it does pose as a waypoint.
Stonewall Outlook
A stone tower atop a tall hill. Not quite as high as the mountains next to it, the stonewall outlook still presents with a decent panorama without having to scale the dangerous cliffs of the nearby ranges.
Twin Cave
An odd cave with two metal rails leading into it. The cave itself comes to an end after a couple minutes walk - it seems as though the rest of the tunnel has collapsed a long time ago. The cold, uninviting cave doesn't attract much attention during the day, but at night one can find glowing mushrooms here, which in return is a beautiful and unique sight.
Uncertain Leadership [ on-going ]
The bomb's detonation killed many members of the pack, including the alpha pair and their successor. As the closest relative, their second son Feykir has stepped in to lead the pack away from the charred lands. He is quietly accepted for the time being, but unrest looms over Valgard like a dark cloud, for Feykir is a wolf with a difficult relationship to many of his pack mates. He is known for his profound knowledge of poisons and other dangerous uses of Valgard's herbalism, which earns him both respect and disdain.
Herbalism
Valgard used to have the most skilled healers known to wolves. Seeing how most of their elderly members have succumbed to their injuries, the pack now lacks a large portion of their traditional knowledge. Still, Valgard is home to advanced herbalism capable to produce effective medicine for a wide variety of ailments.
Bartering
Having had a high standing with their neighbouring packs, Valgard practiced a unique behavior known as bartering. They traded cures as well as their healers' skills in exchange for more rare ingredients and other objects they desired. Once recovered, they are likely going to re-adopt this behavior for their pack to flourish again.
Feasting
Whenever the pack has made a large kill, it was a tradition to call the pack together and practice an honorable feast. Although the alpha has the final say-so, the hunters were usually the ones being granted the first bite. Not seldomly did herbalists bring exhilarating herbs to consume with the meat, creating an exuberant atmosphere.
Since the bombing took place at such a feast, the pack has grown more hesitant from practicing any turbulent activities. Afraid more bombs lie beneath their paws, the wolves of Valgard now embrace a less bustling lifestyle.
Pelt Staining
The habit of dying their coats originates from accidental discoloration during healing sessions. Over the course of several generations herbalists have experimented with different
ingredients, thusly broadening the range of colors and application methods. There are different colors available for different occasions. For more details, please check the Shop.
Paint Examples:
Alpha
The leader(s) of the pack. Usually consisting of an alpha pair (most commonly mates), these wolves are responsible for the pack's well-being and their overall guidance.
Beta
These wolves are handpicked by the alpha(s) to guide their ruling and act as advisors in times of uncertainty. They are the most trusted friends of the alpha(s).
Gamma
The best at their tasks. They are usually long-term members who have proven their worth.
Delta
The main portion of the pack; Ranked wolves who are still honing their skills.
Kappa
Untasked but valued members such as puppies, juveniles, honored guests or the elderly.
Omega
Untasked members such as newcomers, guests and those stripped of their rank.
Hunters
Hunters are the core of the pack, as they help carrying those who can't fend for themselves. They are working twice as hard to feed the pack these days, while they reside in terrain they don't know very well just yet. Whereas other packs spend only part of their day hunting, Valgard hunters rarely return unless they've made a kill.
Howlers
Similar to other packs' scouts, Howlers travel the lands in search of hunting grounds, nesting dens or otherwise valuable sites. Being the vocal creatures they are, the wolves of Valgard commonly signal their location by howling. Even now that they are more vulnerable, the habit of excessive howling is deeply engraved within their culture.
Healers
Valgard used to take pride in their herbal knowledge. Their healers were known far and wide for their unusually skillful utilizing of nature. Now that they are forced to inhabit strange lands, their healers have to re-adapt to the changed scape of fauna and flora.
Healers are expected to show patience, compassion and quick thinking.
