Blending Genes

If you haven't checked out the genetics page yet, please do so first. Otherwise you won't understand what we're talking about on this page. Here we will discuss the interplay of different genes.

Combinations on the same Locus

Pseudo-Saddle

Sable + Creeping Tan
Ayas

  • What happens? The creeping tan gene influences the sable and helps pool black hairs together in the same areas as on a creeping tan.
  • Result: a saddle-like shape on the back. The pseudo-saddle still has a red undercoat like every version of sable though and can range in size and expression.
  • Restrictions: None

Sable Tan / Sable & Tan

Sable + Black & Tan
Ayat

  • What happens? The genes for Sable and for Black & Tan melt together and shape a mix of both. This can result in two different outcomes.
  • Result #1: Sable Tan = a sable so heavily ticked with black that it almost resembles a creeping tan dog. The undercoat is red all over the body though while on a creeping tan dog the black parts are fully black, including the undercoat! See picture #1
  • Result #2: Sable & Tan = a normal sable looking coat with distinct tan points. see picture #2
  • Restrictions: None

Extended Tan

Creeping Tan + Black & Tan
asat

  • What happens? The A-Locus gets stuck in between Saddles and Black & Tan.
  • Result: A pattern that looks like extended tan points. Pups start out with regular black & tan and the red extends over time until it reaches its final pattern in adulthood.
  • Restrictions: None

Combinations of different Locii

Pseudo-Black

Black & Tan + Extended Mask
atat + EmEm

  • What happens? The mask extends so far down the body that it covers most of the tan points.
  • Result: An almost fully black wolf with only traces of tan points, usually on their legs.
  • Restrictions: None

Ghost Tan

Black & Tan + Dominant Black
atat + Kbky

  • What happens? The Black & Tan is "shining through" the dominant black pelt.
  • Result: A pitch black main coat with ever so slight tan points. These are usually off-black or very dark brown and have the same shape as normal tan points. Other black markings like brindle or masks that influence the appearance of the tan points can shine through as well.
  • Restrictions: None

Domino Tan

Black & Tan + Domino
atat + Eg*

  • What happens? The domino gene modifies the tan gene for an unknown reason.
  • Result: Tan points become a lot larger, much lighter (white or off-white) and sometimes they almost connect on the bridge of the nose, leaving something between a distinct dark nose bridge to nothing but a thin dark stripe running down the center of the face.
  • Restrictions: None

Domino Agouti

Agouti + Domino
aw* + Eg*

  • What happens? The domino gene modifies the agouti gene for an unknown reason.
  • Result: The pseudo-tan markings on the agouti become much larger and lighter (white or off-white) and usually rather sharp-edged. The same distinct nose ridge as in the domino tan is created and sometimes the same white "mask" can occur due to extended white eyebrow markings.
  • Restrictions: None

Seal

Sable + Dominant Black
AyAy + Kbky

  • What happens? The Sable "shines through" the dominant black pelt for an unknown reason. Other markings like brindle or masks can shine through as well.
  • Result: A dark brown to off-black pelt with black nose + skin, black markings in the face and down the back.
  • Restrictions: Cannot be used on first characters unless entered via tryout.

Agouti Seal

Agouti + Dominant Black
awaw + Kbky

  • What happens? The Agouti "shines through" the dominant black pelt just like with the regular seal.
  • Result: Very similar to seal, only that the common agouti markings like light eye rims, a lighter collar and lighter stripes/patches behind the shoulder blades occur.
  • Restrictions: Cannot be used on first characters unless entered via tryout.

Watermarking

Mask + Irish White
Em* + sisi

  • What happens? The black hairs from the masking pool around the edges of the white irish markings.
  • Result: Along the lines of the irish white markings, black hairs form a border. The black fringing blends softly into the red coat but forms a hard edge towards the white.
  • Restrictions: Cannot be used on first characters unless entered via tryout.

The examples show piebald and pseudo-irish, but the effect is the same on Irish White and Minimal White!
