Puppy ages

To prevent a dumbing down of pups & juvies, here's a guide to puppy age and development. Of course we're not super strict about these and there's artistic liberties to the different age stages, but it's good to be aware of these stages nonetheless.

1 month old

• fully aware of their surroundings
• start to play at the den's entrance
• follow other wolves around main camp
• play fights begin to occur
• parents leave for normal hunts again

2 months old

• fully weaned

• eat solid food their parents provide

• leave whelping den frequently
• wander freely through main camp area
• fluffy pup coat is replaced by adult hair

3 months old

• attempt to follow on small hunting trips
• adults let pups venture home alone

• generalized training begins

     - refined social skills

     - basic hunting

     - recognizing borders

     aso.

4 months old

• period of rapid growth begins

• milk teeth start to replace

• coat density is (nearly) fully developed and changes with seasons like on adults

• last month before apprenticeship starts

5 months old

• officially considered juvenile

• "lanky phase", need to put on mass

• participate in smaller hunts

• start to look very similar to adult wolves

• sometimes still have to shed pup fur

6 months old

• milk teeth replaced

• nearly indistinguishable from adults

• begin to actively hunt and travel with the pack

10 months old

• expected to pull their weight during hunts

• strengths and weaknesses commonly evince future task at this stage
